Frieze Sculpture 2019 was a free outdoor exhibition in Regent’s Park, London, showcasing more than 20 works by international artists. Visitors strolling through Regent’s Park during summer encountered monumental sculptures by artists such as Tracey Emin, Tom Sachs, and Robert Indiana, turning the park into a museum without walls..
From early July to October 2019, Regent’s Park transformed into a public sculpture park featuring works by Iván Argote, Ghazaleh Avarzamani, Huma Bhabha, and many others. These pieces ranged from monumental figures to surreal interpretations of memory and form, making contemporary sculpture accessible to all.
While the 2019 Regent’s Park sculpture exhibition itself did not include digital or blockchain-based works, the broader Frieze ecosystem has intersected with NFT and blockchain art. In 2021, for example, Damien Hirst presented his NFT series The Currency during Frieze London-related exhibitions. This project consisted of 10,000 digital tokens linked to physical artworks, letting collectors choose either the NFT or the corresponding physical piece.
For another example of blockchain and NFTs entering the London art scene during Frieze, see Damien Hirst’s NFT-related exhibition. Read more on Hypebeast.
This illustrates how large contemporary art events like Frieze can include blockchain art in their wider programming, even if satellite projects such as the Regent’s Park sculpture show remained traditional. Decrypt.
