Pictured: The Fairy Chimneys of Cappadocia - the rock formations that look a bit like goose barnacles. Cappadocia landscape of a semi-arid region in central Turkey is very unique and somewhat surreal. The area is known for tall cone shaped rock formations known as the Fairy Chimneys clustered around in Göreme and other places, as well as Bronze Age cave dwelling carved into rocks that were later used by early Christians.
Pictured: Tuff stone dwellings in Uchisar. The natural rock citadel of Uçhisar is the tallest point in Cappadocia offering great views into the vastness of the landscape. Here you can explore the Uçhisar stone-cut castle and the village. This is what old-style sky scrapers looked like.
Pictured: White travertine terraces with the name Pamukkale meaning Cotton Castle in Turkish. And no, it is not snow or ice! The terraces located in Denizli were formed by the flowing mineral rich hot spring water that left calcium carbonate deposits. You can also visit the neighbouring ancient Roman city of Hierapolis founded around 190BC.
Pictured: The heads on Mount Nemrut (Nemrut Dağ in Turkish). Situated on one of the highest peaks of the Eastern Taurus mountain range in south-east Turkey, the temple-tomb and house of the gods site has five giant seated limestone deities with the large heads of the statues fallen off. There are also other things to see at the site.
Pictured: Rocks and water in Göynük Canyon, one of the most striking natural wonders of Kemer. Here you can see waterfalls, pine forests and nature at its most beautiful. For a bit of extra adventure you can do a bit of kayaking or zip lining. In Kemer you will also find beaches, restaurants, night life with bars and nightclubs, enough to keep your busy on your holiday.
Pergamon or Pergamum was a rich and powerful ancient city with a complicated history that left behind monumental structures from antiquity, located in the present day Izmir province of Turkey. Go and sit in the colossal Amphitheatre and soak in the views. The ancient ruins also include other sites like the library, the red basilica, acropolis, and the Temple of Asclepius.
Pictured: The library, an ancient Roman building in Ephesus, Anatolia. It is one of the most well restored ruins in Turkey. The library was built in honour of a wealthy and highly influential citizen Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus for whom the library served as a final resting place.
