Sumo Suit Athletics World Championship
A warm summer’s day in London. A slight pleasant drizzle revitalizes the green shield of Battersea Park. Sounds of rock music roving from Battersea Power Station enhances the contemporary flavours of the British summer… And there, bobbing along is a yellow fat blob!
A bunch of inflatable sumo suits, a bunch of competitors, a bunch of sports enthusiasts, some sports day activities, spectators, cameras and crews. Oh, how we like our wacky sports days! Now put that burger aside and get into the suit! – A sumo suit!
For those who have previously read about the UK Mobile Phone Throwing Championships held in London may already be familiar with the 8th Day UK Adventures and their wacky sports ideas. The Sumo Suit Athletics World Championships, organised by Ross Williams, will test your athletic skills with an inflatable difference. You’ll have to wear a nice juicy sumo suit when competing.
The Sumo Suit Athletics World Championships, held in London, is a fabulous fun-filled sports day packed with sports activities including the 100 metres race, the 400 metres 'endurance' race, the high jump, the long jump, shot put and giggles.
Having clocked the world record of 14.43s Ed Moyse scooped up the championship medal for 100 metres. Jeremy Gallop (yes, the same Jeremy Gallop who won this year’s UK Mobile Phone Throwing Championship!) had hit the sumo suit heights with the record breaking 1.31m high jump. The inflatable sumo suit long jump champion is Ed Moyse inflating a nice fat world record of 4.25m. Another world record breaker is Sam Hyatt-Twynam for 400 metres, completing it in 1m 26 seconds. And the shot put champion is Jeremy Gallop with the record breaking result of 8.71 metres.
In the inflatable sumo suit women’s terrain, Jo Siggins swept up all the top medals breaking many world records apart from one - the high jump! Alas giving the opportunity for Gabrielle Szekely’s to scoop up the medal for her world record-breaking 1.05m high jump – a true inflatable sumo suit fight against gravity!

This is the fun part. You don t have to be a serious sports person to compete. Anyone can participate. You may have trouble beating the world record breakers but whether you are better or worse you’ll still get your chance to get into the sumo suit and have a laugh!
Once again we give a toast to the man behind the 8th Day UK Sport and Adventure Club and the Sumo Suit Athletics World Championships, Ross Williams! We like your thinking Ross!
