Pictured above: The Bishops Finger beer.
This wonderful beer is produced by the Shepherd Neame brewery in Kent, which has been in existence since 1698 making it Britain’s oldest brewer. Remarkably there is evidence that brewing was happening just a third of a mile away from the current brewing site as long ago as 900AD! So it is not a great surprise that the people of this area know how to produce a great beer. Sadly there is lack of Shepherd Neame pubs in Central London and those that you do come across you must treasure. However one of the great things about the Bishop’s Finger is that it is available in most supermarkets.
Bishop’s Finger is a wonderful mix of a beer, having tastes of spices, oranges and apricots with nutty and malty overtones. It’s as rich and wonderful as a Christmas pudding; indeed a warm Christmas pudding in a glass is a great way to describe this wonderful beer.
Kent makes great ales, and none better than Bishop’s Finger, a beer that is only brewed on a Friday using an antique Russian Teak Mash Tun. The brewer takes the local mineral water from the Faversham well as well as Kentish hops and barley. Bishop’s Finger (5.4% alc/vol) is a marvellous beer and I give it a 10 out of 10 on the Taste of Delight scale. - Try it with a steak and chips. There is even a pub in Smithfield named after the Bishop’s Finger beer that serves the best steak and chips in London.
