Jasper Garvida's SS12 collection 'Autour d'un Point'

Jasper Garvida’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection was all about the woman. Its focus of cinched waists and rippling shoulder ruffles created a strong silhouette, which was emphasized through a minimal monochrome colour palette, drawing all attention to the figure.

The use of gold and silver sweet wrapper metallics for detailing and at times entire garments risked creating a tacky feel to the collection. However the fine execution of designs and craftsmanship created a purely elegant and chic collection. The collection was reminiscent of the luxury glamour of the super rich in Monaco with a futuristic finish. This was echoed in the setting of the catwalk - The Bloomsbury Hotel, which provided the perfect luxe backdrop to Jasper’s designs, exuding extravagance and wealth.

Typical of Jasper Garvida, much of the collection was adorned in his signature sequins, this time in bulky cuts creating the impression of studs and metallic hardware. The metallic embellishments held a military edge, adding contrast to the femininity of the designs and fabrics of the collection. This was highlighted in the earlier pieces with sequined necklines suggestive of armour and harnesses.

Dramatic contrast was further explored throughout the collection with rigid oversized pockets and tailored waists juxtaposed with circular flowing soft fabrics, that moved beautifully down the catwalk. The use of the repeated print inspired from Frantisek Kupka’s ‘Autour d’un point’ painting, fused with tribal influences, really captured Jasper’s image of a crisp, elegant and exotic muse - revealed to be Diana Vreeland.

There was some criticism that Jasper’s collection was a little repetitive but the meticulous detailing and space age twist to classic cuts had me hooked. Now to get rich quick!
