El Caminito del Rey (The King’s Little Pathway) is an up and coming travel destination - that is an award winning walkway pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro, near Ardales in the province of Málaga.
It obtained the Plaque for Merit in Tourism for Up-and-Coming Destinations, won the three most important heritage awards in the EU including the Europa Nostra Award, and the restoration of the pathway won the Grand Prix award and the public choice award during the award presentation ceremony held at La Zarzuela Theatre in Madrid. This is in addition to the award presented in the Town Planning: Town and Landscape at 13th Spanish Architecture and Town Planning Biennial. In fact, they keep on raking in awards so you need to check the details on their information website to which the link is provided below. In short, the destination is promising.
So what makes the site so attractive? Well, the path is surrounded by stunning natural beauty – reservoirs, mountains, gorges and valleys that are difficult to reach.
In the past the walk was known as one of the most dangerous walks in the world following a number of deaths in 1999 and 2000. But fear not as it has since undergone years of extensive repairs and renovations and it has been opened since 2015.
If you want to visit, the general ticket will be 10 Euros and the guided visit 18 Euros. Please note that The Caminito is a one-directional linear tour, which you will start from North (Ardales) and descend to South (El Chorro). The hike is just under 8km and would approximately take two-and-half hours. It’s advisable to wear comfortable shoes.
